Nov 6th Do We Need To Pray Before We Vote?

Today is voting day in the United States. I don’t normally talk about politics, since I don’t have a lot of expertise in that area, but this has been heavy on my heart. In the past few weeks, I’ve been seeing a lot posts about praying before we vote. I agree we need to pray for our country and pray for God’s will to be done in the election. But do we really need to pray WHO to vote for?

The Bible says:

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:14-17

God’s Word should be our voter’s guide. When I vote, I don’t look at what the candidates say they can do for me. I look at what they stand for. When I stand before God in heaven, I don’t want to say, “Sorry Lord, I know that candidate was for abortion, but I voted for them because I thought they could help me financially.”

God is our provider. We are called to live by His Word. His Word is our standard, not the world. If we are truly depending on God, we will trust that He will provide above and beyond what any candidate can provide.

Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—the Lord, who remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.

Psalm 146

No matter the outcome of the election today, we have to trust that we have done our best to vote by God’s Word, and respect the ones who are placed in our authority. “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men. At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy” (Titus 1:1-5).

We may not agree with those who govern us, but we have to remember that God is the ultimate authority. His plan will not be overturned by any authority on earth. God is still in control!

“Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!”

Revelations 5:13

May God and His Word be your guide as you vote today!

“I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths” (Proverbs 4:11).
